Common mistakes made by hot tub owners

By

Whether you're a seasoned pro who has owned a hot tub for a decade or a brand new owner who needs help, check out the list below to make sure your spa care regimen is up to snuff!

  1. Not shocking. Just adding chlorine isn't enough to keep your water balanced and clean. Chlorine can be used up in the water by contaminants and shocking the water frees up chlorine to be able to continue to fight bacteria. Skipping this step is one of the fastest ways to ruin otherwise balanced water.
  2. Ignoring pH. If pH drifts high, water feels harsh and the system becomes less effective. If pH is too low, equipment corrodes and water will irritate skin and eyes. Are you using test strips to check your pH levels?
  3. Leaving an old cartridge in too long. A 6 week old chlorine cartridge won't suddenly revive itself. Toss it out! Replacing cartridges on schedule is far cheaper than correcting neglected water in the long run.
  4. Assuming "low chlorine" means "no maintenance". When water looks off, owners sometimes panic and overcorrect. High sanitizer spikes can lead to bleached covers, faded swimwear, and strong chemical odor. Add chemicals gradually and allow several hours of circulation before retesting. Use restraint!
  5. Not changing or cleaning the filter. Filters need to be checked weekly in a heavily used tub and less frequently if there isn't daily use. You'll use less chemicals and need less cleaning if your filter is doing the hard work for you.

Owning a hot tub should feel like a reward at the end of the day. Unfortunately, a few simple sanitizer mistakes can quietly turn that relaxing soak into cloudy water, strange smells, and unnecessary repairs bills.

Systems like Frog@ease (www.frogproducts.com) use lower chlorine levels than traditional methods. That does not mean the spa is chlorine free.
