One questions we frequently get asked is how often your hot tub water should be changed out. Every tub is different and a big thing to take into consideration is climate and tub load.
Hot tub water is a little like sweet tea on a Tennessee porch. It starts out crisp and clear...then slowly turns into "what exactly is floating in here?"
Here's the practical rule of thumb: every 3 to 4 months for most residential hot tubs. If it's used heavily (more than one bather every day), then more often. If it's used infrequently (one bather once a week), then less often. Hot tub water carries a heavy chemical load.
Water will start to have trouble keeping the free chlorine stable, foam will keep coming back, or there is a persistent smell to the water. Some people even complain that the water feels "thick" or dull when it's unbalanced. Depending on how long you've had your tub, you'll eventually develop the ability to sense when your hot tub water is ready to be changed.
We recommend doing a full spa purge every other time you clean out your tub. Gunk and film can build up deep inside your tub's plumbing and it's impossible to scrub out. A good purge chemical will work inside those lines to free up the trash and oils and get your pipes wiped out. We sell a great product at the store.
Don't forget to add a start up chemical and metal-out once you refill. Also, change or deep clean your filter.
