Pool landscaping tips for Middle Tennessee

By

Whether it's time to update the vibe in your back yard or if you're starting from scratch...knowing what plants will work best in your neck of the woods is important. Pool landscaping can be tricky to newbies.

Here are some important considerations before you head to the greenhouse:

  1. Avoid plants that drop a lot of leaves or berries. Unless you really enjoy vacuuming you pool and using the net to constantly get leaves and junk out of the bottom.
  2. Consider a mixture of permanent, planted things and plants that are in pots. Potted plants can go inside in the winter to save money every year.
  3. Color is just as important as texture. Many people make the mistake of focusing only on large, flowering plants. Tropical landscapes are lush and full of lots of greenery!

Windmill palms are hardy in Zone 7 (middle/north Tennessee). They add height and an island vibe to a landscape scene.

Elephant ears can grow HUGE! They come in a variety of colors and sizes.

Canna Lillies will come back every year and add a pop of color and texture to a green background.

Many people like to use monkey grass and day Lillies around their borders. The greenery part of these plants outlasts the blooms and will stay full and lush all summer. They are also very drought tolerant!

Whatever you choose to plant, keep in mind that frequent mulching, trimming, and separating out overgrown areas will be required to keep the landscaping looking fresh and clean.

Many homeowners choose to have irrigation installed around their pools, due to the intense heat and sun that most pools endure. Pools are rarely sitting in the shade all day! Pool landscaping should be able to withstand heavy sun. Auto irrigation systems are available to help plants stay hydrated and healthy.
